Marble is a type of limestone that has had additional heat and pressure applied to it by the earth’s crust. Marble consists of a mineral called calcite, making it a softer stone than granite. It is usually heavily veined and has visible grains.
Marble is an elegant and luxurious stone. The most common uses of marble are wall tile, floor tile, bathroom vanities and fireplace facings.
Care and Cleaning Because marble is porous and relatively easy to scratch, it requires special care. Marble can stain and etch quite easily so it is important to quickly wipe spills of acidic foods or liquids such as alcohol and citrus juice. Marble is also prone to water stains. To prevent discoloration and staining, marble should be sealed.
Finishes Marble has three types of finish: polished, honed (matte) and acid washed. Both polished and honed surfaces are smooth. Acid washed surfaces have a distressed look.
Edges Marble can be fabricated with a variety of edge treatments. View sample edge treatments.
